I'm a Parent with a Purpose...

I am running for the School Board because I believe it is time for a change. I am passionate about the future of our children and providing adequate skills to prepare them for life. I think all agree, that next to the values nurtured by family, the quality of education received by our children is the most important predictor of their future success, and that success will in turn, define the future of our community.

I am a former teacher who understands the school requirements and goals that force teachers to deviate from their normal course of teaching and teach skills to increase results on the Maryland State Assessment test. I feel that the teachers should have the tools they need to create a successful classroom experience for all the children. Subsequently, teachers should be rewarded for educational strides. In addition, they should have the financial support needed to address and develop strategies to diminish educational deficiencies.

According to the "System Performance Quarterly Report" CCPS recognizes that one of the greatest areas for improvement across all levels continues to be special education students. Something is wrong! CCPS has an award winning Career Center, and a vocational education program, but these students are still not achieving an appropriate level of proficiency.  I believe the Board should further investigate and implement proven programs that are working for special needs children.

Children deserve an advocate- a voice that demands a quality education for all students. A voice that demands that "No child left behind" is a reality and not a slogan. A person that can relate to the needs of the school system and ceases to marginalize the needs of the minority community. I believe that the representation of the Board of Education should be a reflection of our diverse community. Our children should receive an education relevant to the necessary skills required to matriculate to college or secure sufficient jobs.

Yes, Calvert County has one of the top school systems in Maryland, but why is it not number one? I believe that focused and accountable leadership is the answer. Parents can count on me to provide a listening ear, sound judgment, and the determination to succeed.
